The Koi Farms
Koi farms vary in size and scope of operations. Commercial koi farms are usually large and cover several acres of land. Their koi population would be in the hundreds of thousands housed in several ponds. Depending on the location, some koi farms have mud ponds as well as cement ponds. Others have only cement tanks of varied sizes. It is common among koi farms to segregate their fish by size and keep them in separate ponds. Male and female koi are also separated until they reach maturity and are ready to breed.
There are also spawning tanks where adult males and female koi are allowed to mate and spawn. Facilities also include incubating vats or hatcheries where fry are kept until they grow to be fingerlings. A standard in koi farms is the quarantine area where contaminated fish are held while being treated.
Many koi farms participate in shows and competitions. These events and activities are very helpful in building their image in support of their marketing efforts. Known farms use their winners as parent stocks and document the pedigree of the offspring when they’re sold. Koi farms breed and rear several varieties. They keep certain blood lines intact but they also cross-breed koi to produce entirely new varieties and soften the impact of inbreeding. You can find koi farms in different locations around the world but many still buy the koi produced in Japan. The United States and Europe remain to be the biggest importers of koi.
