Information on Spawning Koi
Learning more about the spawning koi process and trying your hand at breeding will take your koi keeping hobby to the next level. You should know that even if you do not do anything, koi will naturally spawn in your pond if they are ready. The females will lay their eggs all over the pond – on the walls, floor and any plants. However, you should not let this happen. The eggs will only be devoured by the other fish and this will stress the females. A few of the eggs may hatch but the fry are still in danger of being eating by the other pond denizens. Meanwhile, the unfertilized eggs left at the pond can promote the growth of bad bacteria. The best thing to do is to allow your koi to spawn under controlled conditions.
When spawning koi, it is best to use females that are at least 4 years old. Their eggs will be larger and more fertile, and will hatch stronger fry. The male koi would be ready for spawning at age two. Keep males and females separate for at least a month before using them for spawning koi. Withhold feeding for a few days before you expect the fish to spawn. You can use 2 or 3 male koi per female. Spawning koi occurs 1 to 3 days after introducing the males to the female. Koi can spawn any time of the day or night although typical koi spawning is around 2 in the morning.
To ensure the survival of a greater number of eggs, you can place artificial spawning media like ropes, cloth strips or vegetable sacking in the pond. The females would prefer to deposit their eggs on them rather than the hard walls of the pond. If you are using a separate incubating vat, remove the eggs as soon as they are laid to prevent the parents from eating them. The water in your hatchery should be of the same temperature as the spawning pond and should be well oxygenated. Now all you have to do is wait. It shan’t be long before you see the results of your spawning koi.
