Information on How to Properly Take Care of Koi

Many pond owners around the world choose koi for pond fish. It’s because koi are colorful and have interesting personalities. In addition, koi fish tend to live long, from 25 to 35 years. It has even been reported that the koi fish’s ancestral predecessors lived as long as 200 hundred years. If you have pond, whether it’s at home or where you work, koi fish make great pets.

The koi we know today is fairly new. Koi fish were originally bred from carp fish in Japan during the 1820s. In fact, “koi” is actually Japanese for “carp”. The result of this breeding are koi fish with brilliant color patterns – blue, green, black, white, silver and yellow. If you take care to properly care for your koi fish, you can expect to have koi fish with vibrant colors.

Compared to other fish, koi are different because they hardly do a lot of schooling. If you have a small pond and a lot of koi, it may look as though the koi fish form a school. However, put the same number of koi in a larger pond and you will see the koi fish in small groups. They are social with nearly all other fish that are about the same size as them. Koi feed on tiny fish and the larger fish will eat koi.

Koi fish tend to grow large, up to 3 feet long, if they are in a large pond. To properly care for koi, make sure that you place them in a pond that can hold at least 500 gallons of water. If you have a smaller koi pond, you’ll need to eventually move your koi to a larger pond as they grow larger. You can have as many small koi as you want if your pond is large enough, or you can have a few larger koi fish. However, try not to mix small and big koi in one pond. In addition, the total mass of the koi fish in your pond must match the space in your pond. Keep in mind that you need to give your koi fish plenty of space to move around in the pond if you want them to grow healthy.

You also need to make sure that the water in your koi pond is clean and pH balanced. It can be a challenge to keep the water clean and balanced if you have too many koi in your pond. Thus, you need to learn and understand space, water balance and temperature when you’re caring for koi.

The right temperature for the water in a koi pond needs to be between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit for your koi fish to remain in good health. When it comes to feeding your koi, you need to know that you should avoid feeding them when the water is cold. If your koi fish are cold, their digestive system tend to come to slow down. Thus, if you feed your koi fish when they are cold, they won’t be able to digest the food; the food in their stomach will simply become rancid. If the temperature of the koi pond goes down to 50 degrees Fahrenheit, it’s almost a certainty that your koi will die if you feed them in that temperature.

Once you learn and understand how to  properly care for your koi fish, you will find that taking care of your koi is a very rewarding undertaking. Your koi pond becomes a haven in your backyard, and you will find that your koi fish are happy to interact with you whenever it’s feeding time.
